Well Happy New Year everyone!

This was a big year for me, with some big changes, all for the better. My lesson learned, is if your situation isn't where you want to be, change it. Be ready to jump on opportunities. Improve yourself.

Those are my resolutions for this New Year as well.

Specifically I want to:

1. Maintain a healthy weight. I know I'm not fair off and I can do it easily if I make it a goal.

2. Avoid unhealthy addictions. While I'm not into alcohol or drugs I need to avoid websites and games that don't have redeeming qualities. Even D&D can be good for socialization and logical thinking.

3. Organize things and shake things up for the better.

It's late and I'm reading journal from furries and it seems a common theme that they're having some life problem that they're trying to overcome. I wish I could come up with some helpful response. Perhaps just "*hug*". Or maybe "Struggle makes you stronger and appreciate success more." (Of course I know that if it's a serious problem and you're in danger of harming yourself or others that the correct answer is to call 911.) But for more day-to-day problems, I'm not sure what advice to give to people who write in their journals. My own personal experience is limited and I can't get inside your head.

I do think that each of you is capable of success beyond your wildest dreams; financial success, relationship success, and self-fulfillment.

Have you thought about the steps you'll take in order to achieve success? Sometimes there's luck, but you've got to have a plan for jumping on that luck when it turns your way.

Maybe we don't know how to remove to roadblocks to your success, but maybe we can point you in the right direction. Over on the BC Furries forum, we have created a new board, called "Help and Advice", ( http://www.bcfurries.com/forum/index.php?board=64.0 ) where we hope everyone can share from their knowledge and experience. *

* Not a substitute for medical or legal advice. Consult a professional for help with these problems.

Man, I hate those kind of dreams where everything goes wrong: you have more stuff than you thought and fewer boxes; everyone is waiting for you; things disappear from where they should be; familiar objects work in convoluted ways. You wake up and the stress has followed you into the real world.

On Instant Messenger etiquette
Well, I just gotta rant a bit about Instant Messenger etiquette.

1. If You are the one who starts messaging Me, I think it's obviously your responsibility to carry the conversation. Am I wrong to think that?
Random Furry: Hi
Rat: Hi
Random Furry: You're not very talkative.

2. If you've got something to say, go ahead and say it. Instant Messenger tag is silly. Just say what you want to say!
Random Furry: Hi
Rat: Auto-message: I am currently away from the computer.
[three hours later]
Rat: Hi
Random Furry: Auto-message: I am currently away from the computer.
[three hours later]
Random Furry: Can I ask you a question?
Rat: Auto-message: I am currently away from the computer.
[three hours later]
Rat: Sure
Random Furry: Auto-message: I am currently away from the computer.

3. And speaking of Instant Messenger tag. If instant messenger says away, it's probably true.
Random Furry: Hi, how's it going? :)
Rat: Auto-message: I am currently away from the computer.
Random Furry: Rat?
Rat: Auto-message: I am currently away from the computer.
Random Furry: Hello
Rat: Auto-message: I am currently away from the computer.
Random Furry: HELLO?
Rat: Auto-message: I am currently away from the computer.
Random Furry: HELLO?
Rat: Auto-message: I am currently away from the computer.
Random Furry: RAT!
Rat: Auto-message: I am currently away from the computer.
Random Furry: Talk to me.
Rat: Auto-message: I am currently away from the computer.
Random Furry: Please
Rat: Auto-message: I am currently away from the computer.
Random Furry: Why won't you talk to me?
Rat: Auto-message: I am currently away from the computer.
Random Furry: Do you hate me?
Rat: Auto-message: I am currently away from the computer.
Random Furry: Well I hate you too!
Rat: Auto-message: I am currently away from the computer.

And bonus telephone etiquette:

1. If you phone someone and you don't want to leave a message, hang up before the beep. Still sort of rude to not leave any message, but if you hang up before the beep, at least I don't have to call the voice mail just to hear you hang up.

2. If your voice mail is "Come on Rat. Pick up, come up, I know you're there, pick up", Get with the times. Are you still stuck in the 80s? Do you think voice mail is a tape recorder and speaker hooked up to the phone?

I was curious how many furries there are, so here is an attempt to get a ballpark number.

bcfurries.com has 451 members, nearly all in British Columbia. The out-of-province members are probably offset by people who don't have accounts.

The population of BC is 4,419,974 according to Wikipedia. 451 / 4419974 = 0.000102036799, or 0.0102% of the population are furries.

The population of Canada is 34,095,000 according to Wikipedia: 34095000* 0.000102036799 = 3,478.94466, so 3479 furries in Canada.

The population of the United States is 309,212,000 according to Wikipedia. Assuming a similar ratio, since the culture is similar, 309 212 000 * 0.000102036799 = 31 551.0027, so 31551 furries in the United States. 3479+31551 = 35030.

Multiplying the ratio by the world population would probably be a mistake, since furry is a lot more popular in Western cultures. If you want to extend this estimate or show a different method, feel free.

Has my last entry started a meme? Looks like my video predates Anthrocon's:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bDyLVvfn61s (Anthrocon's video, not mine)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VS205Ed5L5A (My video)

(Of course the whole Google Search Stories video thing is a meme. I don't begrudge anyone making their own)

Maybe you've heard of Google Search Stories:

I decided to make a furry-themed one:

Anthrocon roommate?
Looking for an Anthrocon roommate. I haven't made all the other arrangements, but no point in making them if you don't have a place to stay.

I don't have a room so looking for someone who has one.

-Non-smoker, (almost) non-drinker, might have friends visit, but not having any parties
-Fursuiter, so need a bit of space for it, need to be able to come and go, have own key.
-Pretty clean, but fursuiter, so might leave my regular clothes out while suiting, or have fursuit laying out to dry.
-Even floor or couch is okay for sleeping.
-I generally come on Thursday and leave on Tuesday.
-Hopefully in the con hotel.

Oh yeah, Obama looks up to Canadian health care
'President Obama slams health insurance companies, says Canadian health care "works"'

But then I read this

"Several polls have shown a majority of Americans — though confused about what's in the legislation — want Obama to set aside health-care reform or start over from scratch."

Sure, maybe there's adjustments that could be made to a Canada-style system. Why on earth would so many Americans be against the entire idea?

Without healthcare reform, a serious illness can financially destroy pretty much anyone. First, if you have a serious longterm illness, you're probably going to lose your job. Second, private insurance companies can and do cancel health care insurance for people who are seriously ill. So with just a slight twist of fate with a serious illness, those people against healthcare reform could find themselves having to choose between bankruptcy and death, even those who think they're insulated from the problem.
The number of people who could truly pull through a serious long-term illness without government assistance is small indeed. Makes you wonder who is truly against healthcare reform.

If you are against healthcare reform, I'd like to hear your reasoning.

The weekend
Well, this weekend looked like it would be quiet. Went to Surrey on Friday for a meeting with other furries. Saturday didn't look like there would be anything but got an invite to come along to bellfurs at the last minute. So I ended up going to that for the weekend. I didn't bring my suit, because I was still feeling sick, but i took pictures and video, and I will make something out of it and post it soon.

I found out that the locals went fursuiting downtown Vancouver. http://nitroshep.livejournal.com/26889.html Don't worry guys, I don't feel bad about not going; I wasn't feeling up to suiting anyway, but I want to hear all about it.
